ON LOCATION:

Most of the action in THE LAST VICTIM takes place in the Pacific Northwest: Seattle and up the Pacific coast of Alaska.

Lake Union in Seattle is the iconic picture of houseboats with Mt Rainier in the background. Jordan Dane has walked those streets and says she loves this area of Seattle.

Floatplanes are used to get around Alaska. Jordan has researched the exact type of floatplane flown by air services in Alaska and looked at their fleet to pick what would work for the scene.

JORDAN’S RESEARCH:

“Basically every scene in my books are highly researched to satisfy my natural curiosity and make things as authentic as possible. When I describe rooms, I often search for examples of what’s in my mind but can’t put into words because I’m not an interior designer or an architect. That requires work to describe elements in a room (without too many details that would slow the pace) but I learn things and like that.

To research the flora and fauna of the Prince of Wales Island, I contacted the chamber of commerce in Klawock and ‘met’ Grace who later became a beta reader for me. She sent countless brochures and personal photos of many interesting places on the island. She taught me about the Native Swamp Tea and what people ate on the island. She was an invaluable resource for me until she left the island and moved so much that we lost track of each other. Wonderfully insightful woman, very generous with her time.”

CREATING MINOR CHARACTERS:

“Sometimes I need minor character names. When I do, I often pick one of my relatives to stick into my novel. In THE LAST VICTIM, the Alaska State Trooper at the end, Dawson Biggers, is my nephew who loves his hamburgers. I don’t tell my relatives when I’ve done this. That way I can tell who is reading my books. HA! They all get a kick out of the surprise.

Pets are fair game too. In THE LAST VICTIM, I immortalized my now deceased yellow tabby, Pinot Grigio (Rest in Peace, little man), and I added my sweet cuddly rescue dog, Sancho, as Trooper/Sergeant Justine Peterson’s pets at her cabin. Ryker met them when she brought him home to stay with her the first night he was in Point Baker on the Prince of Wales Island.”

Bestselling, critically-acclaimed author Jordan Dane’s gritty thrillers are ripped from the headlines with vivid settings, intrigue, and dark humor. Publishers Weekly compared her intense novels to Lisa Jackson, Lisa Gardner, and Tami Hoag, naming her debut novel NO ONE HEARD HER SCREAM as Best Books of 2008. She also pens young-adult novels for Harlequin Teen. Formerly an energy sales manager, she now writes full time. Jordan shares her Texas residence with two lucky rescue dogs.

I lived in AK during the 80s. I lived there for 10 years and my life’s experiences up there were inspiration for Ryker’s trek into the mountains Deb & Cindy at Portage Glacier AKon the Prince of Wales Island. I’m the red head in the shots. Here’s a pic of my sister and I in front of Portage Glacier outside of Anchorage. It’s amazing how much that glacier has receded due to global warming. Look it up now and it’s gone.

In another pic I’m with my Native Alaskan friend Jean (Haida tribe) and her Canadian boyfriend Chris. We were fishing for “reds” and limited out within minutes on either side of midnight.

We were cleaning fish until the wee hours of the morning. Fly fishing. Then I have my biggest fish ever. A 60 lb KKING SALMON 60 lbs with MIKE OLSONing Salmon. I’m with my fishing buddy, Mike. Of course I am much younger in these photos.
